V-ball player off to Poland
Tom Berridge, sports editor
Simon Fraser Univer-sity women's volleyball team member Krystyna Adams will represent Canada at the under-21 world beach volleyball championships in Poland, Aug. 23 to 27.
Adams was invited to attend national tryouts in Toronto earlier this year following a second-place finish at the 2005 Canadian under-18 championships.
This past season, Adams earned an all-star mention at the u-20 nationals in Hamilton as a member of the B.C. Olympics Club and was the team leader in kills, helping guide her squad to a bronze medal.
Adams will compete in Poland with a new partner, Douglas College's Kristin Knapp.

Four members of Canada's Women's World Cup squad were called to the stage and presented their teammate, and Burnaby Lake RFC captain, Julia Sugawara with the female player of the year award.
Presenter, Mark Slay called for donations to support the women's team.
Those in attendance responded with donations totaling more than $5,000, a tremendous show of support for our national women from the B.C. rugby community.

Frank Ciaccia's White-caps u-17 boys are going to Florida in November.
Ciaccia coaches the team - which had participated in the tournament as u-16s - in Burnaby.
Before they leave for Florida, Ciaccia has arranged for them to train in Los Angeles on Aug. 5 against a u-19 team from Chivas, Mexico.
As part of the road trip, the u-17 team will also see two marquee soccer games. Major League Soccer's New England Revolution play Chivas before reigning European champions FC Barcelona face Guada-lajara at the Los Angeles Coliseum as part of their pre-season tour.
Tennis, anyone?
Local tennis players are invited to participate in both singles and doubles tennis leagues that will start in the first week of September.
It's a good opportunity to play tennis at your own skill level, regardless of age or gender.
The only criteria for skill level placement is the ability to play. Players or teams will play a minimum of six matches against players of their own competitive skill level. All matches will be on local community tennis courts.
Each league will conclude with a playoff between the top players or teams and league results will be recorded on the Internet. The deadline for registration is Aug. 15.
For more information, or to get a registration form, go to www.bctennis leagues.50megs.com on the Internet.

U-18 pucksters
Kyle Turris, a top player with the Burnaby Express, is in Calgary this week trying out for Canada's national u-18 hockey team.
The national summer under-18 team's selection camp begins today, Satur-day.
It will continue through to Wednesday at the Father David Bauer Arena.
There will be 44 of the country's top players who are less than 18 years old - born in 1989 or later - and are vying for a spot on Team Canada.
Their numbers will be whittled down to a final roster of 22 by Wednesday by Hockey Canada head scout Jim Hammett, head coach Cory Clouston and assistant coaches Dave Hunchak and Jeff Truitt.
The final team will leave for Europe on Thursday to play at the upcoming junior world cup, the Ivan Hlinka Memorial, in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
That tournament will take place from Aug. 8 to 12.
The national under-18 program is a part of Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence, which also includes Canada's national junior team and the regional and provincial u-17 teams that take part in either the world under-17 challenge or the Canada Winter Games.
