Young Burnaby athletes on teams
Jakie Kohli has the metal to prove her mettle.
The Burnaby resident is a member of the B.C. women's water polo team, which took gold at the recent 2006 Youth Cup, held in Vancouver last weekend.
The B.C. men, a team that included Daniel Tausen and Chris Toy of Burnaby, won silver in their competition at the same event.
In the women's gold medal game, B.C. was up against Quebec 1 in an evenly matched game between two strong teams.
The local team pulled ahead in the last quarter and won 9-7.
British Columbia's Saara Majuri was named the tournament's most valuable player and Athina Vazeos was named to the all-star team. The B.C. women's coach, James Gardiner, was named most valuable coach.
The women had sailed through the tournament without a loss, starting with an early game on July 20 against Ontario 2.
They won that one 9-6 and continued to dominate that day, defeating Quebec 2 11-3 in an afternoon match-up.
Having won their group, they didn't play again until the semifinal the morning of July 22, squashing Ontario 1 15-6.
The final game went on Sunday.
The B.C. men also started off well, defeating Quebec 1 on July 20 by a score of 12-4.
Later that day, it was their turn to go down, losing 12-7 to eventual nemesis Ontario 1.
The following day, the B.C. men played Alberta and beat them 9-3 in an afternoon game.
They still had the energy in the evening to then go out and beat Quebec 2 by an overwhelming 22-0.
A semifinal squeaker, 7-6, over Ontario 2 sent the B.C. men into the final on Sunday afternoon.
The gold-medal match against Ontario 1 was another tight game, tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation play. The game went into overtime and, at the end of the first overtime quarter, the score was still tied, but this time at 8-8. Two minutes into the second quarter, Ontario scored and held on to win 9-8.
Stuart Preston and Evan Van Niekerk were the two B.C. players named to the all-star team.
Bronze medals in the tournament went to Ontario 1 on the women's side and Quebec 1 on the men's side.
