Swimmer just misses world semifinal finish in Montreal
Simon Fraser Aquatics swimmer Kathleen Stoody had a personal-best 17th-place finish in the 200-metre breaststroke at the World Aquatic Championships in Montreal July 28.
Stoody finished 17th overall after the heats of the breaststroke, with a time of 2:32.18, just one spot away from a berth into the semifinals.
It was Stoody's first time at the world championships and fastest-ever heat swim, said SFA coach Liam Donnelly.
"Unfortunately, at this level you need to be at your best to advance. Kathleen is just at the beginning of her international swimming career and there is a learning curve that goes with that," Donnelly said in a prepared release.
Stoody also placed 25th in the 100-m breast and later won her heat in the 50-m sprint Saturday but placed 28th overall.
The Burnaby swimmer will be joining Team Canada at the FISU World Student Games in Turkey Aug. 11.
Wait is over
Stoody was also awarded her silver medal from the Pan Am Games in 2003 by FINA in Montreal.
Stoody originally won the bronze medal in the 200-m breast at the competition but moved up after an American swimmer was later disqualified for a drug infraction.
