Close call in Ladner dampens master's run award ceremony

Burnaby runner John Moe had a weekend to remember Aug. 8 in Ladner.

The just-turned 50-year-old was the top master's runner at the New Balance half marathon in the city and then had the shock of his life during the awards ceremony at the Ladner Lesiure Centre later in the day, when a fan broke away from the ceiling and fell to the arena floor. Luckily no one was hurt.

Moe, who finished the race fifth overall, was timed in 1:18.41 in the over-40 men's division.

The 23-kilogram fan plummeted approximately 50 feet to the arena floor, missing a runner by inches and Moe, who was standing eight feet away from where the fan hit the floor.

"By the grace of God it didn't hit anybody," said Moe. "There were angels on duty that day."

Back to school

Burnaby Laker junior A lacrosse captain Nenad Gajic will be going back to school following the Minto Cup.

Gajic, who left Michigan State midway through his freshman season last year, will be playing Division 1 ice hockey at Nebraska-Omaha next season in 2005-06.

Gajic must red-shirt with the varsity squad this year because of NCAA transfer rules.

"I'm just happy. Things didn't work out so good at Michigan State. It's nice to get a second chance at another school," Gajic said.

Intermediate-aged Scott Bordignon of Burnaby will be heading to the Philadelphia area of the U.S. this September to play field lacrosse at Cabrini College.

Bordignon will be playing attack and midfield for the Division 3 school, which polled as high as eighth in the nation last year.

World Cup site

Swangard Stadium will be the site for Canada's third home game of the CONCACAF semifinal round qualifications for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Canada will play Costa Rica at the Burnaby venue, Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at Ticketmaster, beginning Monday, Aug. 16.

A Giant opening

The Vancouver Giants will open their Western Hockey League season with a home game at the Pacific Coliseum against the Portland Winter Hawks Saturday, Sept. 25.

The game will high-light the recently-signed Atlanta Thrashers prospect Braydon Coburn.

A passing fancy

Vancouver Trojans quarterback John Makie won his first player of the week in the B.C. Football Conference, despite a very close 24 to 17 loss to the South Fraser Rams last Saturday.

Makie, who took a similar honour last year while playing in the prairie conference, completed 20 of 35 pass attempts for 270 yards and one TD for the Trojans, who call Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West home.
