Two Olympians to Greece
Burnaby's Emilie Mondor and Lyndsey Belisle will be among the 105 athletes from B.C. representing Canada at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, which begin this Friday.
Mondor, the first Canadian woman to run under 15 minutes in the 5,000 metres, will be competing at that distance Aug. 20 to 23.
Belisle will be wrestling in the 48-kilogram division when the women grapplers make their debut at the Olympics on Aug. 22.
New Westminster pitcher Aaron Myette will take to the field with Canada's baseball team.
The B.C. contingent makes up nearly 40 per cent of Canada's 266-member team.
The Athens Games run from Aug. 11 to 29.
Future development
Burnaby South secondary's Becky Lawrence won three gold medals at the B.C. junior development track and field meet in Kamloops July 25.
Lawrence placed first in the 100 and 200 metres and in the high jump, one week after winning three medals at the B.C. Summer Games. Keynan Parker also won in the 100- and 200-m sprints.
Michelle Peragine placed first and Alexandra Cukor finished in the runner-up spot in the girls' 400m.
Miranda Quinn was another Burnaby medallist, taking silver in the triple jump.
Emma Vogt placed fourth and fifth in the 400 and 800m, while Samuel Vela was fifth at both 100 and 400m. Lee Catton also made the 100m final.
