Wildcat spears javelin record

Burnaby's Curtis Moss did what he came to do.

The 17-year-old Burnaby Central senior shattered the long-standing men's javelin record by nearly four metres at the Royal Canadian Legion national juvenile track and field championships in Sudbury, Ont. last week.

Moss broke Ontario thrower Mike Demunnik's 1990 record of 64.62 metres on his first throw of the competition, hurling the 700-gram javelin just over 65 metres.

Last year at the juvenile nationals, Moss just missed breaking the record by less than a metre with a winning distance of 64.18m on his final throw.

His goal this year was to return and complete that unfinished business.

With the competition already won, Moss uncorked a 68.29m toss on his final throw to obliterate his pending record.

Andrew Spiro of B.C. placed second overall with a 61.12m throw.

In June, Moss just missed setting a new high school record provincial mark, winning gold at the B.C. championships at Swangard Stadium.

He then won both the provincial juvenile and junior men's javelin titles in back-to-back meets later in the month, improving his personal best with each successive outing.

"That's spectacular, 68 metres, my God. What a year. It's the grand slam in my opinion," said Moss' throwing coach Don Steen.

Moss will return to Central for his senior year and a chance to leave his javelin mark in the high school record books.
