Teen golfer wins historic twin titles at nationals
It's been a busy summer for Rafael Lee of Burnaby.
The 16-year-old local linkster added the Canadian junior and juvenile golf titles to a long list of accomplishments, winning the twin national titles with an even-par 280 at Marine Drive Golf and Country Club in Vancouver Friday.
Lee, one of four juvenile-aged golfers from B.C. who finished in the top six, won by six strokes over Keven Fortin-Simard of Quebec with a final round 74 on the par-70, 6,384-yard course.
Two Lower Mainland 13-year-olds, Richard Lee of Vancouver and Eugene Wong of North Vancouver, finished third and fourth respectively.
Rafael Lee led the field from the opening day, carding a tournament low five-under 65, and was never seriously threatened thereafter, shooting solid rounds of 71 and 70 over the next two days.
With the win, Lee became just the fourth juvenile in the history of the Royal Canadian Golf Association to win the junior title.
Prior to the junior nationals, Lee also chalked up the B.C. junior and Western Future Links titles, as well as the Vancouver city amateur. Lee also placed fifth at the junior worlds in San Diego, California.
Lee is currently competing at the 100th annual Canadian men's amateur golf championships in Beaconsfield, Que.
