Dogs sink Mariners in sweep
By Tom Berridge, Burnaby Now sports
The Burnaby Bulldogs improved their Pacific Metro baseball league record to 9-4 with a two-game sweep of the Surrey Mariners Sunday.
Mike Sinclair scattered seven hits and struck out five to get a 1-0 complete game shutout win in the opener at Robert Burnaby Park.
Jordy Alexander, independent league pro and a member of the national team program, went the distance, fanning 10 Surrey batters in the nightcap to get the win in a 6-1 Bullldogs' victory.
Stewart Mackenzie had a double and two singles and Brian Briscoe batted in the winning run in the opening inning in Game 1.
Jeff Sheppard went two-for-three at the plate and knocked in two runs in the later game.
Trevor Murray and Mackenzie also had single RBIs for Burnaby.
Last weekend, Burnaby avenged an earlier sweep in Nanaimo by edging the Island visitors at home 3-1 and 2-1.
"Unfortunately, we've been playing in a lot of close games. But we have had really, really good pitching all year. Our pitching has been outstanding. Mike Sinclair and Trevor Murray have been two of the top four pitchers in the league," said head coach Tim Fehr.
"And our defence, with the exception of one game last week, has been unbelievable. It's as good as I've seen our team."
Weekend tourney
The Lower Mainland Baseball Associaton 18-and-over division will be hosting a long weekend tournament at Robert Burnaby Park, Friday, May 21 to Monday, May 24.
