SFU thrower peaking at right time
Simon Fraser University's Jennifer Padrinao is peaking for the NAIA track and field nationals.
The 22-year-old hammer thrower won the event at the Ken Foreman Invitational in Washington State Saturday with her best toss this season.
Padrinao hurled the hammer 55.68 metres to capture the gold medal, the second longest throw in the NAIA this season.
The defending two-time NAIA champion is not a lock heading into the nationals, however. Vivian Chukwuemeka of Azusa Pacific has a best throw of 57.93m this year.
Padrinao set the current NAIA meet record of 55.68m last year. The national championship meet is May 27 and 29 in Louisville, Kentucky.
No hammer thrower has ever won three consecutive NAIA national titles.
Also at the Foreman meet, sprinter Grace Dunnigan ran her best 400-m of the season, placing second, one-one hundredths of a second behind Terran Legard's winning time of 56.16.
Natasha Wodak was also second in the women's 3,000-m in a time of 10:04.26.
Game breaker
Burnaby North instructor Laurent Scaligine shared in the scoring in Pegasus's 3-0 Provincial Cup win over Westside Rino.
Scaligine set up Randy Celebrini for his second goal late in the senior men's soccer final Saturday.
