History made at hoop classic
Burnaby's teams made club history, sweeping all three titles at the sixth annual Metropolis at Metrotown Basketball Classic over spring break.
The host South Burnaby Metro Club Eagles won the u-13B and u-14 crowns, while the Best Tigers captured the u-13A division championship.
The Tigers clipped the Eagles in the u-13A championship game, winning 59-41.
Best cruised into the final with double-digit wins over the North Shore, Vancouver, Abbotsford and North Langley. SBMC had a harder time, winning a three-way tiebreaker in its pool before scraping by Vancouver 53-47 in the semifinal.
The two teams split a pair of games in Metro league play. The Eagles captured the regular season championship, while the Tigers took revenge in the playoffs.
Jonard Petilla of the Tigers set a new overall scoring record of 112 points over five games and was named the tournament's most valuable player.
Clarke Callejo, with 85 points, and Khas Arianpour, with 41, also made major contributions. South Burnaby's Michael Cheung was the Eagles' MVP with 63 total points.
SBMC went undefeated in five u-13B games, including a 53-39 win over Earl Marriott. Kevin Block tallied a total of 95 points to take MVP honours.
South Burnaby was also unbeaten at the u-14 level.
Karol Cybula was named MVP behind a 52-point performance in the tourney. Teammate Jobair Satara led all tournament scorers with 63 points.
Outdoor tennis leagues
Local tennis players are invited to participate in organized singles and doubles tennis leagues, beginning in April.
Minimum six matches against players of similar skill level.
