Small Bruins play big against host Hawks
It's been a long road to the provincial peewee B1 ice hockey championships for the Burnaby Winter Club Bruins.
The largely first-year squad overcame size and the top-ranked host team, Abbotsford Hawks, 6-4 in the championship final Thursday.
"All players stepped up to the plate with all their hearts and best performances of the year throughout the five-day tournament.
"This was about a team and was definitely a team win, with every player contributing in their own way. I'm proud of every one of them," said BWC co-coach Brian Lamb.
Abbotsford had the best record in the peewee B league, with 19 wins and just one loss.
The second-place Bruins were next best at 18-2.
The Winter Club knocked off North Shore Winter Club in its group playoff final four to make it to the provincials.
At the B.C. tournament, the Bruins went 4-1, losing a 9-7 match to fourth-place-finishing Prince George in pool play.
BWC defeated Kelowna 6-2 to earn a spot in the provincial final.
"If not for the team's outstanding play and stellar goaltending, it could've easily gone the other way. They really earned their spot to the provincial championships," added co-coach Mark Fidgett.
Forwards Cody Fidgett, Dustin Mowrey, Riley Lamb, Justin Dorey, Ryan Hankin, Danny Merth, Mitchell Frank, David Eng and Giancarlo Romano supplied the firepower for the Bruins, while Simon Denis, Cody Musto, Nicholas Wong and Daniel Cayer were among the best defensive units in the league in front of the stellar goaltending of Ryan Sass.
