Lise Leveill‚ starts college with a Hawaiian fling

Burnaby's Lise Leveill‚ helped the Stanford Cardinal women's gymnastics team win the Maui Invitational by winning the all-around competition Friday.

The junior gymnast edged Cardinal teammate Natalie Foley for the overall title, scoring a total of 39.400 points for the No. 7-ranked Stanford team.

Stanford recorded a team score of 196.050 points. Arizona State finished second with 194.200, followed by New Hampshire and San Jose State.

Leveill‚ won the balance beam with a 9.950 and also placed second in floor exercise (9.875) and vault (9.825). She also posted a 9.750 score on the uneven bars.

Stanford swept the top three places on both beam and on the floor, with Foley taking first spot. The Cardinal also won the uneven bars with junior Caroline Fluhrer's 9.900 score, and vault behind freshman Glyn Sweets' 9.875 in her first collegiate meet.

Leveill‚ was named a first team All-American on beam and a second team All-American on floor exercise as a result of her 9.875 showing at the NCAA championships.

She recorded a 9.838 at NCAAs on balance beam to take sixth-place honors overall. Leveill‚ also earned academic All-America honours last year.
