Local kid named BCHL player of the week

Burnaby's Marc Fulton ended the old year as the B.C. Hockey League player of the week.

The 20-year-old Burnaby product scored five goals and added three assists in three games to help the Victoria Salsa go 2-1 over the Christmas holidays.

Fulton was traded from the Interior division-leading Vernon Vipers in mid-December for league scoring leader Curtis Fraser and is currently second best on the Victoria squad, tallying 44 points in 40 games, including 19 goals.

The 6-2, 200-pound forward had a goal and one assist in Victoria's 5-2 loss to Cowichan Valley last weekend as the Salsa still trail the Island division six points back of the fourth-place Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

In other BCHL ramblings, Mike DiStefano scored a hat trick in Powell River's 4-1 win over Chilliwack Thursday and then added the 5-4 game-winner on a penalty shot in Victoria Friday. The 19-year-old DiStefano is currently second overall in BCHL scoring with 27 goals and 45 helpers, just seven points behind Fraser.

D-man Phil Tocco assisted on three goals in a 9-5 loss to Prince George as the first-year Williams Lake entry dropped its 27th game of the season.

Burnaby players also flexed their scoring muscle for the second-year Coquitlam Express, figuring in on nine of 10 goals this weekend.

David Moncur and Mark Soares scored power play goals and rookie Brock Bradford added an assist on the third goal in Coquitlam's 4-3 overtime loss to South Surrey Friday.

On Saturday, Rob Pritchard had a goal and one helper, while Soares, Moncur and Bradford also assisted in a 6-4 Express win over Langley. John Dekanich got his first BCHL win, kicking out 23 shots in the Coquitlam net.
